MESSAGE FROM YOUR DISTRICT GOVERNOR

There is a story from New Zealand where caterpillars follow a circuitous route around, for example, a flowerpot.  They continue to go around the flowerpot until they eventually die of starvation, even though there may be food close by.  We can fall into that same trap of essentially doing the same thing over and over again without thinking of other opportunities that would raise our exposure in the community or better serve those less fortunate than ourselves.

In addressing the District Governors, Mehendra Amarsuriya, our International President, noted “Much has changed and much has stayed the same.  What has not changed is the spirit of Lions and our dedication to service.  Integrity and compassion mean as much to us today as they did to our founders.  But we no longer do business from a roll-up desk as Melvin Jones did.  When we answer the telephone we are as likely to take it from a pocket as from a stand on our desk.  What has changed is not what Lions do, but the way we do things.  To keep up with our fast-changing world, Lions must make even greater changes in the way we do things.”

The Challenge to Change is a natural follow-up to President Jimmy Ross’ theme of “We Serve”, i.e. getting back into performing acts of community service and making ourselves known to the community”.  Internationally, “Challenge to Change” addresses many issues from AIDS to environmental issues to education.  The aspect of Challenge to Change that applies to clubs is rebranding ourselves and becoming relevant in a changing world.

The greatest challenge we face as Lions is adapting to a changing world and society, remaining relevant and determining how to attract and retain new members with different lifestyles.

As one Lion recently said,  “People don’t join Lions Clubs to go to meetings.  They join Lions to do things that Lions do.”  There is a loud and clear message in that statement.  With the active lifestyle most people lead today, they want to use their precious time to do worthwhile and interesting projects.  Lions, like other organizations, are competing for their time.  We must become actively involved and open to new ideas.  Meetings can be planned to be short, but interesting.  All members need to be engaged in some type of activity.  New members are welcomed and are encouraged to become active participants in the group as soon a possible.

Whether it is at the district or club level, we must examine what we are doing and determine if it is still important to the organization. The next steps are to discard projects or activities that are no longer relevant.  We can adopt new programs, procedures, fundraisers and community activities that are directed at serving those less fortunate than ourselves.

Clubs need to advertise and promote their organizations, try new ideas, be more family conscious, be innovative in all our activities, and have fun along the way.

Finally, while this may seem to be only the start of our leadership year, the time to begin planning for the future is now!  We, the Region and Zone Chairs, the MERL Team and I, are available to assist you.  I urge clubs to take advantage of these available resources.

This can be a very exciting year as we address the Challenge to Change.  It begins with a commitment to change what needs to be changed.  I sincerely believe that together we can meet the Challenge.

Not above you, not beneath you, but with you.

Joe Rizzo

District Governor

A GREAT OPPORTUNITY

This info was sent to me by Leo Club AdvisorPeter Bertelli

A Lion from Australia set up a website for Lions, Lioness, and Leos to chat with each other globally via an online message board.  What a great opportunity to trade idea’s and promote fellowship!  This website may be accessed at www.lionschat.org   maybe this is something all Lions in the District would enjoy.

Keep up the good work Peter you have really grown from a wonderful Leo to a great Lion.  We will look forward to seeing you progress in your passion for Lionism.

CHANGE IN INTERNATIONAL POLICY REGARDING PAYMENT OF DUES

International has changed its policy regarding the payment of club dues.  Previously, clubs were allowed to owe $1000 for up to 150 days prior to being put in a suspension status.  The new policy is that if a club owes $20 per member and that dues has not been paid within 150 days, the club is automatically put on suspension and given 90 days to pay the amount due or make payment arrangements.  If neither is done, then the club’s charter is automatically revoked after this 90-day period.
