DISTRICT GOVERNOR JOE’S
FEBRUARY MESSAGE
As the 2008 year began, District 33S was the
first district to hold its Mid Winter Conference and it was an OUTSTANDING
event! The credit for its success starts
with the Committee and Host Club. PDGs
Jim and Kathy Amaral and PDG Paul and Lion Linda Schleicher coupled with the
work of the Acushnet Lions Club led by President Bill Murphy III in the area of
registrations, decorations and the reception took our mid winter conference to
new heights and guarantees another sell out next year. The Friday night meal followed by the murder
mystery began the weekend on a high note.
Presentations by PDG John Cobb, RCAL Ed Olney, and Dr. Sayon Roy
complimented our Saturday morning business meeting. The speech contest, chaired by Jesse Armel,
was again a highlight of the conference and the Saturday night banquet
highlighted by Hoyle Awards (Rachelle and Don Hebert, and Martin and Joyce
Middleton), Presidential Awards (Ken Corti and Gretchen Olney) and Melvin Jones
Awards (Lorraine Guy, Paula Grenier, and Sylvia Redpath). A special presentation of thanks from Captain
Nathan Wilder, commander of the unit we supported in
Operation
Upcoming events include the Cabinet Advisory Meeting on
February 25th at the Lakeville Lions Club, Emerging Leadership
Training at Camp Clara Barton (Feb 29-Mar 2), District Bowl-a-thon on March 30th
and the State Convention on May 9 thru 11th in Nashua NH. In
addition, club anniversary dates include (1)
Membership is slightly down from the beginning of the year and it is my hope that each club continues to strive for a net gain of one new member by the end of the year. Sometimes all it takes is to ask a person to join.
This
is the final year for Campaign Sight First II.
While many clubs have joined in this effort, there are others that
should consider joining. Internationally,
they are $20 million short of the goal of $150 million. Considering that a Melvin Jones is given for
each $1000 donated, each club may wish to consider making this year’s donation
to LCIF a donation to CSF II.
While we are continuing our CSF II efforts, I am, at the same time, asking each club to consider donating 5% more to the Mass Lions Eye Research Fund this year. We proved we could do it last year, i.e., support both efforts. I know that a modest increase is an attainable goal if we all commit to these worthwhile causes.
Based on the success of our 2006 International Convention,
Yours

The GOAL of 30,000 EYE GLASSES
HAS BEEN MET
While the goal of collecting 30,000 pairs of eye glasses for SriLanka has been met we are continuing to collect eye glasses. Please remove all eye glasses from the cases.
We have a program with Barnstable Prison. Inmates are reading the glasses. To continue with this program we will need 500 pair per week. In addition the Rotary Club has requested 13,000 pairs of glasses not washed or read. This request has also been met.
It is great that the world’s two largest service organizations can work hand in hand.
Thanks for your support and keep the eye glasses coming. Any questions please contact

DISTRICT 33S WEB SIGHT
Lions District 33S (
Our Web
page is now up and running with a new host and plenty (REAALY PLENTY) of
space. This is a bust time of year but I am finding time to get information up
on the page and to make some improvements to the page. We
really need to have district committee chairs send some information to replace
the pages with something other than empty pages. There are several committees
that have nothing posted on their pages, and several with old obsolete
information. Obsolete information is in many cases better than no
information at all.
Please contact me at LionsMike@aol.com
or LionsMike@verizon.net if you have any questions about how to send
information.

HELPING ALEX
Hi, I am Alex Dalpe
Alex was born on July 8, 2005 to Bill and Beth Dalpe of Rehoboth. At four months of age Alex was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome (severe Myoclonic Epilepsy in Infancy).
A form of Epilepsy so rare that fewer than 500 cases world wide are known to exist. There is no known cure for Dravet Syndrome and it is nearly impossible to control with conventional seizure medications. For additional information please review website http://idea-league.org/dravet.html. Due to the tremendous effects of Alex’s condition the Rehoboth Lions are establishing a fund raising raffle in order to help alleviate the financial burden for Alex’s family. We are enlisting the help of any organization that would like to help us sell raffle tickets. All proceeds will help defray current and future expenses for Alex.
The following prizes will be raffled off on Rehoboth Public Access Channel 9 live on April 11, 2008 at 7p.m.
One week for two at a Florida Condo, on beach, includes round trip air fare.
