“CHALLENGE TO CHANGE”
MESSAGE FROM DISTRICT GOVERNOR
If the shoe doesn’t fit, do you throw away the foot? For many years, many clubs may have been trying to force a shoe onto a foot and still coming up with the same results – it won’t fit. Maybe, it’s time to try a new shoe size. All of this goes to say is that it a new year, a new beginning and possibly it’s time to try new initiatives.
The greatest challenge we face as Lions is adapting to a changing world and society, remaining relevant and determining how to attract and retain new members with different lifestyles. Whether it is at the district or club level, we must examine what we are doing and determine if it is still relevant. The next steps are to discard projects or activities that are no longer relevant and adopt new programs, procedures, fund raisers and community activities that portray Lions at their finest and are directed at serving those less fortunate than ourselves. We must also be willing to advertise and promote our organization, try new ideas, be more family conscious, be innovative in all our activities, and have fun along the way.
Personally I support change – not for the sake of change, but to improve what we do, to be more efficient and to make our work more interesting. If we become too complacent with our situation, we could face stagnation. As Lions and Lions clubs, this could result in membership loss, becoming irrelevant in the community and/or loss of a club entirely.
This is the time for planning the new year. Think outside the box and consider some of the following: 1) do a membership survey and take your members recommendations into consideration in your planning, 2) conduct a community survey to identify the needs of your community, 3) plan an advertising campaign, 4) consider doing a brainstorming session for new ideas with your members, and 5) schedule a club retreat to plan the year and possibly developing a long range plan. The choice is each club’s to make. We, the region and zone chairs, the MERL Team and I, are available to assist you. I urge clubs to take advantage of these available resources.
Proud
of our past… imagine the future! Let’s
make our future a choice not a chance!
Yours in Lionism,
Joe Rizzo District Governor
CHANGE IN INTERNATIONAL POLICY REGARDING
PAYMENT OF DUES
International
has changed its policy regarding the payment of club dues. Previously, clubs were allowed to owe $1000
for up to 150 days prior to being put in a suspension status. The new policy is that if a club owes $20 per
member and that dues has not been paid within 150 days, the club is
automatically put on suspension and given 90 days to pay the amount due or make
payment arrangements. If neither is
done, then the club’s charter is automatically revoked after this 90-day
period.
